"TRAM KOPEKS"

In 2004 my book "Tram Kopeks" (in Russian) was published by Kurch publishers, Kiev, in a series "Kiev and Kievans", dedicated to (perhaps somewhat loosely defined) history of city life.

Abstract:

The book is dedicated to the history of tariffs, tickets, and payment options on the Kiev public transportation — beginning from the 1891 launch of horse tram and up to the present time. The narrative is based upon official data as well as upon reminiscences, anecdotal stories, etc. Special attention has been paid to the little-known details pertaining to the prerevolutionary period, World Wars I and II; events of the recent years have been well elucidated, too.

This edition is illustrated richly; most of the photos and ticket samples are published for the first time. Appendixes contain lists of routes and tariff zones from different years.

The volume is 80 pages.

The book is the first circulated publication in twelve years dedicated to the history of Kiev trams. It is written rather informally, not as a history textbook, but as an attempt to reconstruct city life the way it presented itself to an average citizen. At the same time, most of the facts, of which there are plenty, have never been published before.

A non-Russian reader may still be interested in the rich illustrative material, including historic and contemporary tram/trolley/bus photos as well an almost complete collection of reproductions of Kiev tickets. Basic knowledge of the alphabet should suffice in order to perceive the accompanying information.

Convinced yet? :-)
