MTB-82: "I GET ON THE BLUE TROLLEY BUS ON THE RUN..."

Part 2 (201–257)

207A winter setting at Ploschad Kalinina (Nezavisimosti). This is where a turning loop for trolleybus routes going out to Lukyanovka and further to Syrets and Kurenevka used to be. Trailing MTB-82 No. 207 is a two-door 9Tr No. 182. At the end of the 1970s the square was reconfigured, and thе loop moved to a point where Sofievskaya and Malaya Zhitomirskaya streets converge, which is where it is nowadays.

208During the 1960s, the MTBs were gradually repainted, becoming white or cream instead of blue. Here a freshly-painted 208 passes the intersection of Krasnoarmeyskaya and Ivana Kudri, serving route 13. Seen in the background is the Kiev Dzerzhinsky Electric Transport Factory, which was being expanded at that time. During 2003‒04, not without some effort by then-Mayor Omelchenko, the site was sold, and the factory downscaled to a bare minimum and relocated to the Kurenevka Tram Depot.

211Kreschatik viewed from Ploschad Kalinina at the beginning of the 1960s. The MTB-82s still bear the manufacturer's livery. Moving in the opposite direction is another group of trolleybuses with a Skoda 8Tr in the head.

215In 1966, Vladimir Veklich, Chief Engineer at Trolleybus Depot No. 2, formed the world's first experimental multiple-unit trolleybus train. The experiment proved to be a success and was later on extended onto Skoda 9Tr's. Here, in 1969, a decoupled MTB+MTB train is seen laying over at the then-terminus of route 5, Ulitsa Severosyretskaya.

217In October 1959, tram service on Vladimirskaya was suspended. By way of a compensation (much less than adequate, as almost always), trolleybus route 15 started running from Ploschad Tolstogo to Pravitelstvennaya (Mihailovskaya) Ploschad. Tram tracks, however were left intact until next year. This picture can therefore be attributed to the fall of 1959 or spring of 1960. The location is Vladimirskaya between Tolstogo and Bulvar Shevchenko, almost opposite the main entrance to the main building of Kiev University.

220A view to the west from Vozduhoflotsky Most (bridge). Some old buildings, dating back to before 1917, can be seen, as well as a tram line along Brest-Litovskoe Shosse. Once can discern two MTB-82s as well as two LAZ-695 buses.

223In 1969, a trolleybus line on Belorusskaya Ulitsa (previously served by trams) was inaugurated. The turning loop was built on Lukyanovskaya Ploschad, which is where we see this MTB No. 223. This is still the terminus of route 23 to the neighborhood of Nivki, which has not changed during its forty years of existence.

226A view along Kreschatik from Bessarabskaya Ploschad. A trolleybus on route 1, which connected the downtown area with Demievka back then, is approaching.

237Another stretch of Brest-Litovsky Prospekt, most probably near Politehnicheskij Institut. The trolleybus is serving route 7, from Ploschad Stalina to Polevaya — as seen on its route sign. Trucks and a country bus are trailing the trolleybus, and a dump truck is going in the opposite direction.

241This is the beginning of Krasnoarmeyskaya, near the Bessarabskaya Ploschad stop, outbound. Two MTBs, 241 an 373, are in the picture. In the background is the storefront of the Syajvo bookstore.

247A perspective of the beginning of Ulitsa Lenina (these days, Bogdana Khmelnitskogo) viewed towards Kreschatik. A total of four MTBs are in the picture. The 247 is most probably on route 8, from Kreschatik to Chokolovka. A typical Stalin-style building, towering over Kreschatik, is in the far background.

250The end part of Krasnoarmeyskaya, with Ploschad Dzerzhinskogo (where Metro Lybedskaya is now) in the background. The two trolleybuses closest to us, 10 and 250, are both on route 10, linking Vokzal and Most Patona. Between them is a LAZ-695 bus.

257A perspective of Ulitsa Lenina from the intersection with Vladimirskaya towards Kreschatik. A brand-new MTB No. 257 is on route 2, from Ploschad Stalina to Vokzal. Behind it is the only private car in the picture, a Pobeda. Kiev's chestnuts are in full flourish...
