RVZ-6 — A GHOST FROM RIGA

(1601–1640)

The RVZ-6 tram, manufactured by the Riga Car Factory (hence the name, Rizhsky Vagonny Zavod), did not leave a significant trace in Kiev transit history. There were 40 of them, all in the then-new Darnitsa Depot. Being "heirs" to the MTV-82, they were given fleet numbers from the next hundred: 1601–1640. However, at that time (the beginning of the 1960s) Kiev was already committed to replenishing its rolling stock with the Czech-manufactured Tatras. Therefore, the RVZs ended up running for a few years only, before being transferred to other cities.

Only a few pictures of these cars are known to us.

1601Apparently at the DShK (Darnitsky Shelkovy Kombinat, i.e., Darnitsa Silk Works) loop, which is where Metro Lesnaya is today. The landscape is still quite countrylike; no retail kiosks surround it, like they do today...

1602The Krasny Khutor loop, the freshly-built terminus of Route 29. Very few traces of civilization here apart from the tracks and the tram car itself.

1604The tram approaches the Voskresenskaya Slobodka terminus of route 21 (the present name of the stop is Bulvar Perova, with route 22 ending here). We look in the northeastern direction; the current address of the building in the far background is Mikitenko 15.

1614Another shot at the Krasny Khutor loop (Route 29).

1616Once again the DShK loop. Route 33 ran from here to DVRZ (Darnitsa Car Repair Factory) back then.

1640Looking southeast. The tram on the left is approaching the Voskresenskaya Slobodka terminus, the one on the right is leaving it. The buildings in the background, from right to left, are Stalskogo 16, 18, and 20.
