MTB-82: "I GET ON THE BLUE TROLLEY BUS ON THE RUN..."

Part 3 (301–400)

307A few multiple-unit MTB-82 trains in Depot No. 2. The 307, in the foreground, is signed for route 6, one of the most heavily loaded routes at the time, from the city center towards Ul. Stetsenko.

319On this photo, most probably from the end of 1950s or beginning of 1960s, the trolleybus is turning from Kreschatik onto Bulvar Tarasa Shevchenko, serving route 9 from downtown to the Zhulyany airport. Visible on the right is a piece of the Bessarabsky Rynok, the oldest covered market in Kiev. A few GAZ-51 trucks surround the trolleybus.

320Looking at Ploschad Pobedy from the corner of Bulvar Shevchenko and Ulitsa Saksaganskogo. The circus building has just been completed. In the middle of the square, there is a globe with the Sputnik, the first Soviet satellite launched three years earlier. Many cars and trucks, as well as five trolleybuses (three inbound, two outbound), can be seen in the picture.

322Another picture at Bessarabskaya Ploschad, at the end of Kreschatik. The MTB-82, most probably, is about to turn into Bulvar Shevchenko. By that time, MTBs were gradually being taken out of service, remaining only on Depot No. 2 routes. In between the MTB and a Skoda 9Tr there is a PAZ-652 bus; behind the MTB, a GAZ-51 truck.

338Up until 1959, the present-day Bulvar Druzhby Narodov was called Avtostrada. At the beginning of the 1950s, a trolleybus line was built here. Such was a view along Avtostrada from Pechersky Most, which connected Bulvar Lesi Ukrainki with Ulitsa Bastionnaya and Kikvidze.

339Brest-Litovsky Prospekt in the neighborhood of Zheleznodorozhnoe Peresechenie (Railway Crossing; nowadays the vicinity of Metro Beresteyskaya). Across the roadway one can see the tram tracks which used to connect the downtown area with the outskirt of Svyatoshin. The trolleybus is going towards the then-new residential area of Nivki.

344Another part of Brest-Litovsky Prospekt, a few years earlier. The photographer stands at the corner of Zoologicheskaya, and we are looking at the avenue in the outbound direction, towards the present-day location of Metro Shulyavskaya. The trolleybus is inbound, followed by a multitude of trucks.

346One of a multitude of "traditional" shots on Kreschatik. Three MTB-82s are approaching the intersection with Proreznaya. In the far background there is a lone Pobeda, the standard Soviet passenger car of the time.

349This is the only stretch in Kiev where trolleybus service ended up being replaced with tram. The place is Novoborschagovskaya Ulitsa (nowadays Prospekt Kosmonavta Komarova), the trolleybus route is 21, which was launched in the early 1960s and connected two new residential areas, Syrets and Otradny. In 1978, the speed tram (light rail) line opened here, and the trolleybus line was moved to parallel streets.

352Ploschad Kalinina near the beginning of Kreschatik. To the right of the trolleybuses is the Main Post Office building, erected in 1956.

355The intersection of Bulvar Shevchenko and Vladimirskaya. Tram tracks are still present on the latter (tram service terminated here in 1959). The route sign of the trolleybus displays route 5, from Ploschad Tolstogo to the above-mentioned Zheleznodorozhnoe Peresechenie.

357The already-familiar terminus of route 5, in the residential area of Nivki. Most probably, an MTB-82 train is being decoupled. The initial plan — never quite implemented because of technical issues — was to run trains during rush hours and to decouple them and use single trolleybuses with the same headway at other times.

361The actual first experimental MTB train, 361+367, on the grounds of Depot No. 2. Note that the trolley poles are raised on the leading vehicle and lowered on the trailer; in serial trains, it was done the other way around.

363The already-familiar intersection of Bulvar Shevchenko and Vladimirskaya. A few Pobeda cars are before and behind the trolleybus.

365An MTB-82 being repaired or overhauled in Depot No. 2. Through the front glass one can see the partition separating the driver's cab from the passenger compartment. The route sign displays the number of route that this vehicle served last, 5.

366The trolleybus is turning left from Vladimirskaya onto Bulvar Shevchenko, its run along route 15 to Ploschad Tolstogo nearing completion. Soon thereafter, trolleybuses here started running straight down Vladimirskaya, past the main entrance to the University building.

373Same spot, same route, same pattern. The only difference is in the fleet number of the trolleybus and in its position on the photo.

374Depot No. 2 in the mid-1960s, viewed from the exit. The 374 is at the head of a column of MTB-82s. On the right is a string of newer ZiU-5s, with 921 at the head.

380Once again, the intersection of Bulvar Shevchenko and Vladimirskaya, with tram tracks on the latter. The trolleybus, as before, is on route 15, bound for Ploschad Tolstogo.

383Ploschad Bogdana Khmelnitskogo (nowadays Sofievskaya). The trolleybus, on route 15 towards Ploschad Tolstogo, is passing by the main entrance to St Sophia of Kiev, the ancient Christian temple dating back to the first half of XI century. In the background is Vladimirskaya 22, a rental property built at the end of XIX — beginning of XX century.

392Bessarabskaya Ploschad again. The trolleybus is following route towards the then-suburb of Demievka.

396A work scene in Depot No. 2. A driver or a depot worker manipulates a vehicle's trolley poles. Beyond the hangar gate one can see the rear of a Skoda 9Tr.

399Ploschad Pobedy soon after the completion of the circus building. There are two MTBs, 398 and 399, and two of their diesel brethren, ZiS-158 buses. On the left is a special small car for the disabled.
